Spring/Summer 2014 trend

SS14 is bringing sexy back, but this time, it’s just not as you know it, Jane Chanakira explores.

Legs, cleavage, and a voluptuous bum are typically words synonymous with sexiness. Sexy is the above picture of Cindy Crawford photographed by Herb Ritt’s. Sexy is the beach babe soaking up the sun, her skin glistening and glowing as radiated by the summer sun, a two-piece bikini leaving little to the imagination.

For this summer designer’s opted for a sensual and subtle way of exposing the skin by displacing attention on the body. And that’s just what makes this trend approachable and friendlier than it seems: peekaboo mesh, laser cuts, and sheer overlays exude an air of mystery and effortless charm; imagine hidden tattoos peering from underneath a crop top. Or the sultry seduction of barely-there mid-riffs, and backless waistcoasts elicit the romantic gesture of a loved one carefully placing his hand on the small of your back. There are slits in skirts and dresses that show as you walk or finished with sheer overlays, décolletages on show and tops stopping just above the cleavage. It’s a game of confidence, and control by teasing, flirting with, and interrupting the onlooker’s eyes.

It’s an undeniably empowering trend that allows the wearer to celebrate more of their body than allowed by the confines of a bodycon pencil skirt or a low-cut top. Greater is the choice to expose an open back, shoulders, or a mid-riff in tasteful ways. The redefinition of sexy is enticing and as seductive as Herb Ritt’s iconic photo of the five supermodels huddled and clinging onto each other; their nudity modest, yet provocative.

Perhaps the trend was fueled by a hyper-sexually charged year in pop music, with debates about what, and when is a woman allowed to explore her sexuality- Lui’s, Chanel, Proenza Schouler and others among the pack have answered the latter with their collections: there’s more ways than one.

To style the trend, pair and contrast leg-lengthening trousers or midi or maxi skirts with the Daisy two-toned crop top from our collection. For the Poppy off the shoulder dress, adorn your bare neckline with a statement or dainty necklace, or opt for the Cadia crop top or Veronica dress with sheer touches that act as veils and make the looks transition easily from day to evening wear. Ultimately, for an evening look, the caped and cut-out waist Felicia gown makes quite a statement; an interplay of sexy and elegant.
